1.8.6 <Title>

A <Title> element is used wherever another element may wish to have a title. In its must simple format, it just contains a single element of <FormattedTitle> which contains a plain string. However, if a Supplier has access to more structured information then it is possible to provide further information about the title, how it is structured and what alternatives there are. Consumers may utilise this information to better index the information and provide more sensible semantic and visual presentation of the information.

Structured title

 

<MainTitle>

Compulsory, string. The body of the title. This is what should be used in the most ``high profile'' location out of all of the elements.

<SortTitle>

Optional, string. Version of the title that is suitable for alphabetical sorting. Rough guidelines as to how it should be formatted can be found at .

<SubTitle>

Optional, string. It should be assumed that the <SubTitle> will be shown together with the <MainTitle> so it is not necessary to repeat the <MainTitle> as part of the <SubTitle>.

<AlternativeTitle>

Optional and repeatable, string. If the <Title> has current alternatives, then each one may be included in its own <AlternativeTitle> element.

<PreviousTitle>

Optional and repeatable, string. If the <Title> had titles that are no longer in active use then each of these may be included in their own <PreviousTitle> element.

<FormattedTitle>

, Optional, string.

Unstructured title

If you are not going to provide a structured title breakdown, then one most provide a FormattedTitle. This is the route to take if you don't have enough information about the title information to make sensible statements about the semantic structure.
